PP-157 election challenged

Published October 18, 2002

LAHORE, Oct 17: Justice Raja Mohammad Sabir of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday issued notices to the Election Commission and the returning officer concerned on a petition against the election of Rana Tajamul Hussain of PML-N at PP-157.

The petition was filed by a defeated candidate for PP-157, PML-Q’s Rana Shaukat Mahmud, whose counsel contended that Rana Tajamul could not have contested the election, because his proposer and seconder were residents of PP-158 and not eligible to propose and endorse his name for election under the law.

REJECTED: The learned judge rejected the petition of Sardar Kamal Omar, a defeated candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for NA-127, for a direction to the Election Commission and the returning officer concerned for withholding official announcement of the election results at NA-127.

The petitioner’s counsel had contended that equal number of ballot papers were issued for National Assembly and Punjab Assembly seats at every polling station. However, the number of ballots cast for NA election was much more than the number of ballots for PA election in 90 polling stations suggesting foul play.

STAYED: The learned judge stayed the official announcement of the election results at PP-181 (Kasur) and issued notice to the winning candidate, Shahid Qayyum, on a petition challenging the authenticity of his BA degree.

The petitioner, a namesake of Mr Qayyum, contended through his counsel that the winning candidate had been able to use his BA result card to contest the election, as their fathers were also namesake.

Merging for what?

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
