KARACHI: 27.5mm rain recorded

KARACHI, Aug 26: The city received an average rainfall of 27.5 millimetres on Monday.

Officials at the Pakistan Meteorological Department told Dawn on Monday that the Airport observatory had received 47 millimetres of rain, the Shah Faisal observatory 49.5 millimetres, the Masroor base observatory 11 millimetres and the North Karachi observatory 2.5 millimetres.

The Met office chief, Arif Mehmood, said that a weather system that had developed in the western part of India had reached Pakistan on Monday.

“This weather system caused rains in the southern parts of Punjab and Sindh on Monday,” he explained. He said that the rain on Tuesday would not be as heavy as it was on Monday.

Mehmood recalled that on July 1, 1977 the city had received 207 millimetres of rain, which is Karachi’s highest.

He added that August’s highest rainfall was 162.4 millimetres, which had occurred on Aug 2, 1944.

HUB DAM: The water level in the Hub dam reservoir is likely to increase as its catchment area received rain on Monday. Wapda officials told Dawn that the impact of the rainon the reservoir’s water level would be known by Tuesday. The present level of water in the reservoir is 279.30 RL, which is only 1.30 RL from touching its dead storage level.
