Press council rejected

Published March 30, 2002

LAHORE, March 29: Local journalists have rejected the move to set up a press council at a meeting held under the auspices of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the PUJ, local APNEC and Lahore Press Club.

The meeting held at the Lahore Press Club with PFUJ president I. H. Raashed in the chair on Friday, adopted a resolution endorsing the decision of the PFUJ’s BDM that the proposed council would be used to curb the press freedom in a country where there were already over a dozen laws affecting the working of a free press.

The meeting was also addressed by JAC convener Din Muhammad Dard, former PUJ presidents Aziz Mazhar, Saqlain Imam, Bakhatgeer Chaudhry, PUJ general secretary Muhammad Akram, Jang Workers Union’s supreme council general secretary Tasawwar Raza and other senior journalists.
