MUNICH (Germany), April 26: Thailand’s Paradorn Srichaphan eased into the last 16 of the 323,250 euro (419,754 dollar) BMW Open with a straight sets victory over Dutchman Peter Wessels on Tuesday. Seventh seed Paradorn took the first set 6-3 and triumphed 6-4 in the second to face Juan Monaco of Argentina in the next round.

Monaco overcame Lars Burgmuller 7-5, 6-3 in his first round match.

German fourth seed Tommy Haas was another big gun to progress inflicting a 7-5, 6-3 defeat on Spaniard Nicolas Alagro.

Alagro shocked former World No. 2 Haas with some fierce forehands and the German needed some fortunate net deflections before taking the first set 7-5.

But in the second set Spanish hot-head Alagro lost his cool launching his racket into the ground as Haas took a 3-0 lead.

Haas took full advantage of his opponent’s fragile temperament to take the second set 6-3 but refused to talk up his chances of becoming the first German to win the competition since Michael Stich in 1994.

Clijsters struggles

WARSAW: Kim Clijsters looked uneasy during her first claycourt match of the season before finishing with a flourish to earn a 7-5 6-7 6-1 victory over Tatiana Perebiynis in the first round of the WTA tournament in Warsaw.

Compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne, winner on the green clay in Charleston recently, was also in action on Tuesday, overcoming Czech qualifier Denisa Chladkova 6-2 6-2.

Seventh seed Clijsters looked as though she was in for an easy afternoon as she broke in the second game and held two break points for a 4-0 lead.

Ukrainian Perebiynis hit back to stun the former world number one, breaking back in a lengthy seventh game before Clijsters sneaked the set.

Clijsters again dominated the early stages of the second set before being pegged back when she lost her serve to love, allowing world number 77 Perebiynis to move ahead 4-3. The Belgian saved a set point at 5-4 only to lose a tiebreak.

Finally Clijsters made her class tell in the decider as she romped to her 15th consecutive victory after titles at Indian Wells and Miami.
