ISLAMABAD, April 23: The government has made elaborate arrangements to observe EFA (Education for All) Week scheduled to start from Sunday, a statement issued here said. The week is being observed to supplement global efforts as Unesco has declared 2005 as a landmark year for Education for All and Millennium Development Goals.

The major focus of the EFA week will be on achieving the goal of universal primary education by 2015. This year, EFA week’s theme is “Send my friend to school.”

According to the programme, children and adult learners would bring along their cut-out friends and speak out on their behalf to politicians, media representatives and celebrities at a national event.

They will also hold a walk in front of the Parliament House to muster political support for EFA goals.

The children and adults will also call on President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at the culmination of the walk on April 28.

The education ministry has also mobilized the provincial governments to chalk out week-long activities in the urban slums and rural areas to highlight the importance of education.

During the week, elected representatives will visit schools, sign a pledge and receive a “Friend” as a token of their commitment. Thousands of children will also write letters to the president asking him to send their out-of-school friends to school.
