MIRPURKHAS, March 7: Tail-end farmers of the Girhori distributary, fed by the Samaro branch of the Thar canal, have expressed resentment over non-provision of water to their land for two months.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Noor Mohammad Marri, Taj Mohammad Marri, Jalaldin Marri and Ghulam Rasool Marri alleged Darogho Nawaz Gaho and surveyor Ali Dino Manitho had refused to supply their share of water and demanded a bribe.

They said 35,000 acres land had been rendered barren in the area. They said they would stage a protest demonstration outside the office of the Nara canal area water board on Tuesday while a farmer would commit self-immolation.

They demanded that irrigation secretary, Sida chairman and the director of the Nara canal area water board should take notice of the matter and ensure supply of water in Girhore distributary by replacing Darogho and surveyor.

LONG MARCH: A long march being staged under the aegis of Green Rural Development Organization for recovery of family members of Manu Bheel held hostage by an influential land lord of the Sanghar district reached here on Sunday.

Led by Green leader Ghulam Hussain Malookani, Dr Haider and Mitho Malookani, the protesters carried banners and placards and marched on the main roads. They assembled outside the press club and raised slogans against the land lord.

They demanded that family members of Mr Bheel should immediately be recovered. Talking to newsmen, they said various NGOs were taking part in the march and added that in 1998 armed henchmen of the landlord had kidnapped nine family members of Mr Bheel in Waryam Memon village.

They said an FIR was lodged with the Jhuddo police for the recover of kidnap victims but in vain. They regretted that despite assurances by the Sindh governor the family could not be recovered.
