PML-N plans drive on democratic covenant

Published September 16, 2004

ISLAMABAD, Sept 15: Pakistan Muslim League-N has decided to launch a national campaign for developing consensus among the democratic forces and parties in the country on "Meesaq-i- Jamhuriat" (a national democratic covenant) for constitutional and democratic governance in Pakistan.

This covenant will soon be presented before an All Parties Conference, said PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq after a meeting of the party's manifesto committee here on Wednesday.

He said the national covenant would comprise specific proposals on nine points, which were: establishing supremacy of the constitution and parliament; creating an independent judiciary; respecting freedom of expression and media; practising good governance at all levels through strong institutions to establish a clean, responsive, efficient, effective and citizen-friendly government; promoting consensus and continuity on key national economic policies; mainstreaming of under-developed areas and support for neglected groups; eliminating poverty and illiteracy; agreeing on a framework for holding of fair, free and transparent elections and eliminating military interference in politics.
