HC meets Pakistani prisoners in Lanka

COLOMBO, Sept 8: Pakistan's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka has assured Pakistani prisoners here that Pakistan is actively working on an agreement with Sri Lanka regarding exchange of prisoners between the two countries.

Talking to Pakistani prisoners during his visit to two jails here on Wednesday morning, High Commissioner Bashir Wali Mohmand told detainees that the proposed agreement would allow their repatriation to complete their remaining sentence in Pakistani jail.

He said that he would approach the Sri Lankan authorities to accelerate legal proceedings against the detainees awaiting trial since long. "We will assist them in every possible way to cut short this waiting period and dispense justice to you in a speedy manner," he said.

Mr Wali assured the Pakistani prisoners held under minor charges of violating immigration rules that every effort would be made to expedite their deportation to home country. -APP
