KARACHI, Sept 7: The Sindh governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, on Tuesday directed that a strategy be devised for filling all vacancies in government departments, providing job opportunities to eligible persons.

In a meeting with provincial finance minister Syed Sardar Ahmed at the Governor House, Dr Ibad asked him to evolve a strategy and submit it before the provincial cabinet without further delay. "This way, at least 25 to 30 thousand people could be provided jobs," he added.

Unemployment was a big problem and resolving it was a top priority of the government, he said. "The private sector is also being encouraged with provision of infrastructure facilities so that economic activities can be generated."

Dr Ibad laid stress on observing transparency, merit and eligibility at all stages of recruitment, and added that quota for disabled persons should also be implemented. Meanwhile, Mr Faausto Martha Godoy, the ambassador of Brazil in Pakistan called on Governor Ibad at the Governor House. The Honorary Consul General of Brazil in Karachi, Adil Jaafar, and Pakistan's former ambassador to the UK, Abdul Qadir Jaafar, were also present.

IDEAS is Pakistan's foremost and largest defence exhibition in the region. An international seminar would be held on the eve of the exhibition i.e on Sept 13 where delegates from over 70 countries have confirmed their participation.

The Secretary Defence Production, Air Marshal Zahid Anis, was also present on the occasion. The governor was briefed in detail about the measures, take so far by the city administration, especially pertaining to facilitation and security of foreign delegates. The governor issued instructions for giving final touches to the arrangements.

Earlier, Air Marshal Zahid Anis visited the Expo Centre, where DG DEPO, Maj-Gen Syed Ali Hamid and senior management of organizers received him. Maj-Gen Hamid briefed him about arrangements being made at the Expo Centre for delegations and participants of IDEAS 2004.

The organizers said that over 70 delegates comprising the top brass and senior officials from the governments of more than 44 countries had already confirmed their participation at the exhibition.
