KARACHI, May 8: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has said that construction of 20 new major roads would begin in the next three months, which would be completed by 2005.

He stated this while speaking at a ceremony on Tuesday, held to lay the foundation stone of Landhi-12000 road, to be built from Korangi Crossing to Dawood Chowrangi, at an estimated cost of Rs435 million, which would be completed in one year.

Completion of the road will provide easy access to people of Landhi and Korangi to other parts of the city. "I do not make false promises, which is evident from the development work in Karachi," he maintained, adding that he had promised to construct the road three months ago and now it was before all the people.

City Nazim said that no compromise would be made on maintaining the standard and quality in development works, which was a priority at the city government. "My team has a firm attachment with honesty, which is benefiting people," he said, adding that the Shah Faisal Flyover was estimated to be constructed at a cost of Rs280 million, but it was completed three months ahead of the scheduled time at a cost of only Rs190 million.

Landhi Town Nazim Mohammad Shahid, Korangi Town Nazim Adbul Jamil and others also spoke on the occasion. DCO Mir Hussain Ali and EDO Works and Services Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui were also present.

FIRE STATIONS: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has said that at least 150 fire stations are needed in the metropolis, having a population of about 15 million, but presently it has only 20 stations with one snorkel to help the people in case of fire emergencies in high-rises.

"The City District Government Karachi has established 10 new fire stations after its inception, whereas more steps are being taken to construct more fire stations and for the purchase of relevant equipment," the city nazim said.

He urged NGOs, industrialists and philanthropists to extend financial help to the CDGK for purchase of fire-engines, machinery and latest equipment. He expressed these views at a ceremony held to commemorate the firemen, who died while discharging their duty, under the auspices of the city government and the Crescent Youth Organization, at a hotel on Tuesday.

Awards were also given away to the heirs of the dead firemen. City Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan said that firefighters were true heroes and it was good to recognize the services of those at a ceremony, who died in their boots. "The Fire Brigade Department has been experiencing shortage of latest equipment and vehicles, however, performance of the department is exemplary," he observed.

It was also suggested on the occasion that a policy should be formed to provide the heirs of the dead as well as retired firemen with jobs in the department. District officer, Fire Brigade and Civil Defence, Col Ehtishamuddin, informed the audience that two new fire stations would be established soon in the city.

He said that the city government had established a help centre in the Civic Centre to respond to fire emergencies. He further said that the department needed vehicles of different sizes to reach inside narrow localities and slum areas to extinguish fire.

"These are the vehicles of Edhi and Fire Brigade, which arrive first in affected areas," he added. DCO Mir Hussain Ali, EDO, Works and Services, Shoaib Siddiqui, Chief Fire Officer Kazim Ali and others also spoke on the occasion.

VOCATIONAL CENTRE: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of a handicraft and vocational centre in Seta Nagar, Sachal Goth, Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town, to be built an estimated cost of Rs300 million.

City nazim, speaking on the occasion, said that the city government was paying special attention to development of rural areas along with urban parts of the city. Establishment of this centre would enable the women of the area to learn skills for making handicrafts, which would provide them employment, he added.

Speaking at the inauguration of development work in a park in the area, the nazim said that parks were being built in all towns of the city to provide healthy environment to the people, and to reduce air pollution. -PPI
