EU delays vote on new accord

Published April 7, 2004

BRUSSELS, April 6: The European Parliament's foreign affairs committee has delayed a planned vote on a new European Union agreement with Pakistan until next week, parliamentary sources said on Tuesday.

The committee, whose members are split on whether or not to ratify the EU-Pakistan pact, are expected to vote on April 14.

The EU and Pakistan signed the agreement in Nov 2001 but parliament has repeatedly delayed its ratification because of concerns over democracy and human rights in Pakistan.
