SRINAGAR, March 29: Eight people were killed in overnight violence in occupied Kashmir as Mujahideen fired on Monday at the motorcade of the state's ruling party chief, police said.

A convoy led by Mehbooba Mufti, the chief of Kashmir's ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP), came under fire when it travelled near Ashmuqam township in Anantnag district, said the police spokesman.

"Militants fired from a distance when Mehbooba Mufti's motorcade passed Ashmuqam," he said, adding the bullets did not hit any of the cars. However, a paramilitary jeep, which was part of the political leader's convoy, overturned as the driver lost control of his vehicle in the melee.

Two paramilitary soldiers were injured, said the police spokesman. Meanwhile, a security force member was killed and two others injured on Monday in a landmine explosion triggered by freedom fighters in southern Udhampur district, police said.

Mujahideen also killed two policemen late on Sunday in the Udhampur and Anantnag of Kashmir, added police. Indian soldiers killed four Mujahideen overnight in the districts of Anantnag, Pulwama and Poonch, police said, adding a civilian died in the cross-fire during one of the encounters. -APP
