Man gets death sentence

RAWALPINDI, May 16: Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Manzoor Ahmad Mirza on Thursday sentenced a man to death on 11 counts of murder.

The convict, Zafar Iqbal, was also fined a total of Rs1.1 million and would have to undergo 11 years of rigorous imprisonment if he failed to pay the fine.

The convict on January 10, 1994, killed six persons, Mohammad Shahid, Mohammad Akram, Mohammad Riyasat, Abdul Majid, Mohammad Asghar and Gulam Hussain, over a family feud at Arian Muhallah in the jurisdiction of Waris Khan Police Station.

On the same day, he killed another five persons, Mohammad Sadiq, Shaukat, Abdul Khaliq, Ikram Hussain and Ms Nisha, at Sangoori village in the jurisdiction of Mandra Police Station.

The convict escaped twice from the jail.

ACQUITTED: Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Azam Mian acquitted three persons of the charge of murder, giving them the benefit of the doubt.

In an FIR filed with the Kahuta police Mohammad Ramzan, Mohammad Ishtiaq and Rakhshinda Bibi were accused of murdering a woman, Iram Shahzadi, in April 2000.

Meanwhile, Additional District and Sessions Judge Shahzad Parvez Abbasi acquitted Mahbub Ali, Anwar and a woman of the charges of adultery.
