Robber killed in gunplay

GUJRANWALA, Aug 11: A robber, who killed a woman during a dacoity bid, was killed in an encounter with police while his accomplice believed to be drowned in a nearby pond after he jumped into it to save his life in Ghakhar Town on Monday.

Reports said two bandits entered a clinic in Suleman Shah locality and started snatching gold ornaments from patients. On resistance, the intruders shot and killed Najma Bibi and escaped.

The area people chased the culprits, but they jumped into the pond. In the meanwhile, the police also reached there. One of the dacoits swam out of the pond and tried to escape. On seeing police, he fired at them, but was killed in a retaliatory firing.

The dead culprit was identified as Sajjad of Bagrian village while his accomplice was said to be drowned in the pond. His body could not be fished out till the filing of this report.

DIES: A man died after he fell into an open manhole in Ghanta Ghar here on Monday.

Bashir, 60, slipped while crossing the road and fell into the manhole. The people pulled him out and rushed him to hospital where he died.
