VEHARI, June 25: Arif Akram, the regional police officer (Multan), at an open court on Wednesday suspended from service Mitroo police station SHO Umar Younis on the charge of not registering a case of torture.

The open court was conducted at Thingi Colony in Vehari, where the general public heaped scorn on the police and accused the officials of providing protection to the wrongdoers instead of helping the distressed.

Ghulam Husain of Chak 196-WB alleged that a few days back some men belonging to a rival family tortured his brother and fractured his legs but the Mitroo police station SHO refused to register a case against the suspects.

The RPO suspended SHO Umar Younis and ordered Vehari DPO Ashaar Hameed to inquire the matter.

In other complaints, Siddique, Ejaz and Faqir Muhammad said the relevant police teams had failed to arrest the murderers of their fathers despite registration of cases against them. The investigators, they alleged, had got bribe from the culprits.

The RPO asked the DPO to probe the cases with reports within seven days.

Several other people lodged complaints seeking the RPO’s intervention in cases involving the police corruption.

Speaking to the newsmen later, RPO Arif Akram reiterated that there was no room for the corrupt and inefficient officials in the police force, warning the corrupt SHOs to mend ways.

In Multan region, he said, the police had arrested 1,800 proclaimed offenders in the last few days.
