Taxi snatcher kills policeman

RAWALPINDI, June 4: A constable was shot dead in Saddar Bairooni area late Tuesday night when he tried to catch one of the two fleeing suspects. The killer, however, was caught by the policeman’s colleagues.

Ibrahim Tariq, 22, a constable at Saddar Bairooni police station, along with Constable Dilpazir and Assistant Sub- Inspector (ASI) Tahir was on routine patrol at Munawar Colony on Adiala Road when they noticed the presence of two suspicious men.

When the police party approached them, the men tried to flee. The policemen chased them and Ibrahim caught one of the suspects, later identified as Mohammad Saleem, who in a bid to escape shot at the constable.

The bullet ruptured his heart, causing his death on the spot. The other policemen caught Saleem, a resident of Haripur, but his accomplice, Javaid, escaped. During the subsequent investigations, the arrested man revealed that they were planning to hire a taxi and snatch the vehicle.

The deceased police man belonged to a village in district Chakwal and his body would be handed over to his family after performing of initial rituals at the police lines.—Our reporter
