Cop killed, 7 hurt on road

GUJRAT, May 21: A police constable was killed and seven others, including three women, injured in a road accident at Rehmania Bridge on Wednesday.

Reports said a Dinga-bound Mazda loader (LR-3713) collided with a truck (RIN-9750) coming from the opposite direction at Rehmania Bridge. As a result constable Shamas Abbas, 22, a resident of Jhandewal village, who was on board the Mazda, was killed on the spot while Kashif, Shabeer, Fayaz, Asif, Farah, Asiya, and Salma sustained injuries. The injured were shifted to ABS hospital.

ARRESTED: Police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested three criminals in Kakrali village, some 20km away from here.

District Police Officer Afzal Virk said Tassaduq Husain, Lal Khan Pathan and Irfan Rouperi were arrested from the outhouse of Master Ijaz. The police also seized illegal weapons, including two hand-grenades, as many Kalashnikovs and bullets.

RESCUE: Kharian police rescued a robber from being set ablaze by the traders of main bazaar on Tuesday.

Reports said six dacoits entered the currency exchange shop of one Rana Afzal in Kharian main bazaar, snatched Rs1.5 million and some cell phones at gunpoint and fled. Some shopkeepers and passers-by got hold of one of the dacoits. They beat him up and sprinkled kerosene oil on him. In the meantime, the police reached the spot and rescued the robber who was later identified as Atif of Samahni, Azad Kashmir.

The police have registered a case and are raiding for the arrest of other accused.

Gujrat acting DPO Afzal Virk and Kharian circle DSP Munawar Bhatti also reached the spot.

SUICIDES: Three people, including a girl, committed suicide in as many incidents on Wednesday.

Reports said Nargis, 18, of Dhola village committed suicide by taking poisonous pills whereas Nawazash Ali,23, of the same village shot himself dead.

In another incident, Pappu of Jaurra village shot himself dead over a domestic dispute. — Correspondent
