DARRA ADAMKHEL, May 12: A large number of families started leaving Darra town as clashes between security forces and militants continued for the second day on Monday.

Local people said the families were heading towards Peshawar and Kohat.

Security forces have engaged the militants in the town’s Zarghunkhel area and both sides were using rockets and mortars.

Officials said that at least two people, including the principal of a private school, had been killed in the clashes.

Principal Mohammad Jamil was gunned down when he came out of a building besieged by the security forces. Shops and markets remained closed in the town which has been under night curfew for several days.

About 15 shops in the town were looted on Sunday night.

People travelling on the Indus Highway between Peshawar and the southern parts of the province remain stranded.
