HYDERABAD, May 8: Judicial Magistrate-I Kotri sent a mentally disturbed man believed to be police torture victim to Sir Cowasjee Institute of Psychiatry on the request of a doctor of Kotri Taluka Hospital, on Thursday.
The victim remained unidentified as he refused to speak to anyone, including media. People of Pareshan Chowk near Cadet College Petaro where he was thrown on Wednesday from a police mobile informed the local journalists who called police. A journalist said marks of violence on his head and other parts of the body were visible.
The man was taken to Jamshoro police station. Area people said they saw police mobile from which he was thrown. The victim was semi-conscious who was provided cot by the area people. He exhibited refusal to be helped by anyone.
Police shifted him to the Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) Jamshoro but doctors were reluctant to admit him. However, he received some treatment and was brought to Jamshoro police station. On Thursday he was produced before the local judicial magistrate who ordered his medical examination.
The medical officer after the examination of victim submitted a report before the court stating that there were marks of torture on his body. He appeared to be a mentally retarded man and was not cooperating in sharing information thus he should be shifted to Sir Cowasjee Institute of Psychiatry.
Another doctor of Jamshoro district who happened to be there in connection with polio vaccination campaign told Dawn that he also saw the victim who appeared to be hit by bricks and other hard objects that caused injuries. No case was lodged with police.
ROBBERY: Around Rs3 million were looted from a bank in the jurisdiction of A-section police station Latifabad, on Thursday.
Reports said five armed men with their faces covered struck at the Tameer Micro Finance Bank in Unit-11 Latifabad. They disarmed the private security guard, entered the bank and held employees, including women hostage. They demanded keys of the safe where gold worth Rs2.1 million was kept.
A police source said the safe is operated by two separate keys. At that time one of the locks was open while key to other was with the operation manager which he surrendered to bandits. They collected gold ornaments and Rs0.8 million cash from the box and went away.
At the time of incident, branch manager was in the upper storey of the bank. Police said two bank employees including a sweeper and peon were being interrogated for details. Sketches of suspects were being prepared.
No FIR was lodged so far.
