QUETTA, April 19: A dismissed university teacher who had been on a hunger strike for several days ended his protest on Saturday following assurances from Balochistan Governor Zulfiqar Ali Magsi that he would personally look into his grievances.

PML-Q’s MPA Rahela Durrani who visited the strike camp conveyed the governor’s message to Agha Mohammad Nasir that Mr Magsi would invite him and another dismissed teacher, Zakir Hussain Jadoon, for a meeting on Wednesday.

Ms Durrani told mediapersons that she and Jaffar Khan Mandokhel had discussed the issue with the governor and he had agreed to give a personal hearing to the teachers.

Mr Nasir and Mr Jadoon were dismissed by the Balochistan University’s administration.

She said that a draft for the removal of anomalies in the University Model Ordinance (UMO) had been pending before the Balochistan assembly. She claimed that Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani was also in favour of UMO’s repeal.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Association of the Balochistan University announced that its struggle for the repeal of the UMO and the revival of the University Act would continue in order “to create a better academic atmosphere on the campus”.
