NAWABSHAH, April 8: The Nawabshah police raided the residence of caretaker forest minister Sindh, arrested ten people and later booked him, his son and dozens of others for firing on a police party in Khaddar village near here on Tuesday.

According to reports, a heavy contingent of Nawabshah police headed by SPO Sakrand Aijaz Tareen, raided the residence of caretaker forest minister Sindh, Ghulam Rasool Unnar, in Khaddar village for the arrest of his son Abdul Hafeez Unnar, his brother Ghulam Sarwar Unnar and others. The police allegedly thrashed his servants and took away animals and other valuables from their house after arresting a number of people.

Abdul Hafeez, son of Ghulam Rasool Unnar, was nominated along with PML-Q district president Khan Mohammad Dahiri and others in murder case of a PPP activist at Sakrand police station whereas his uncle was booked for blocking national highway near Sabu Rahu.

The police also tried to arrest him during his hearing at session court for confirmation of protective bail a few days ago but he reportedly used influence and escaped. The bail of Abdul Hafeez Unnar and others was rejected by the second additional session judge Nawabshah a couple of weeks ago after which he went underground.

DPO Nawabshah, Rukhsar Kuhawar, told Dawn that police received information about the presence of Abdul Hafeez Unnar, declared absconder in a murder case as well as presence of some suspicious people in Khaddar after which a raid was conducted.

Aijaz Tareen, SPO Sakrand, told Dawn that he raided the place for the arrest of absconders Abdul Hafeez, Ghulam Sarwar and others nominated in different FIRs. He said that Abdul Hafeez Unnar and others had opened fire on police party and escaped from the spot.

He claimed that the police recovered weapons and arrested ten persons who told him that firing on police was carried out on the directives of Ghulam Rasool Unnar.

When contacted, caretaker forest minister Sindh, Ghulam Rasool Unnar, said that a heavy contingent of police raided his house in Khaddar without any warrant or magistrate and looted cash, jewellery, furniture and other valuables, including animals.

He further said that he was sick and was in a hospital in Karachi and Hafeez was with him. He said that he was being politically victimised and was being treated like criminals. He further said that he had no enmity with anyone and the cases registered against his son and other family members were bogus.

He said that he had met with Hakim Ali Zardari and requested him for settlement of the case in which a PPP activist lost his life as his son was innocent.

Later, an FIR was lodged at Sakrand police station against Ghulam Rasool Unnar, Abdul Hafeez Unnar, Ghulam Sarwar Unnar and dozens of others for firing on police party.
