BAHAWALPUR, March 30: Malik Muhammed Aslam Channar and Muhammed Umair Mohsin were elected president and general-secretary of the Bahawalpur High Court Bar Association, respectively, during its annual elections held here on Saturday.

As many as 1227 out of 1228 bar members cast their votes in the polls conducted by election board president Abdul Subhan Chaudhry.

Aslam Channar bagged 755 votes against his rival Mrs Kausar Bhatti’s 443 and became the president of the bar.

Mian Amir Ahmed was elected vice-president from Bahawalpur district by obtaining 640 votes against Tariq Shaheen’s 523.

Umair Mohsin secured 611 votes against Hafiz Abdul Rashid Raashid’s 566 for the slot of general secretary.

Muhammed Shehzad Khan Dukkar was elected joint secretary with 634 votes against Rana Javed’s 529.

All other office-bearers, including five members of the executive council, had already been elected unopposed.

The newly-elected bar officials pledged to continue the lawyers’ struggle for the establishment of rule of law, supremacy of the Constitution and independence and restoration of the judiciary.

MIME: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool has announced a cash prize of Rs200,000 for the dramatic club, which presented a play ‘MIME’ on his arrival to attend the Islamia University, Bahawalpur’s convocation at its Baghdad-ul-Jadid Campus, said a press release issued by the university.
