KARACHI, March 4: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has not yet taken final decision about its future role in parliament, although majority of its workers and leaders are of the view that the party should sit in opposition and provide an opportunity to the Pakistan People’s Party to run the government.

“The consultation process is going on but we have not taken any final decision,” MQM convener Dr Imran Farooq told Dawn. “But the prevalent view in the party and masses is that the MQM should sit in opposition.”

He said that a decision would be taken by the party’s coordination committee in a couple of days.

He said that the participation of MNAs-elect of the MQM in a luncheon hosted by the PML-Q in Islamabad on Tuesday did not necessarily mean that his party had decided to sit in opposition.

The London-based MQM leader told Dawn that the PPP had not made any contact with his party on formation of the coalition government at the Centre or in Sindh.

“The PPP leaders visited the Nine Zero as a gesture of goodwill but they did not contact us for government formation.”

According to sources, the newly-elected legislators in a meeting held on late Monday night recommended to the leadership of the party not to end negotiations with the PPP about forming a coalition at a later stage.
