KARACHI, Jan 13: Chief Minister Justice (Retd) Abdul Qadir Halepota has stressed the need for taking advantage of modern technology to curb crime.

He was speaking at a briefing given to him by officials of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) regarding the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) at the CM’s House. The system aimed at checking carjacking has been evolved by Nadra. The chief minister said availability of a crime data base was essential to check crime in the country.

“There is a need to monitor and control crime in Karachi and particularly the crime involving vehicles,” he said, and noted that modern technology could greatly help control crime.

He described Nadra’s initiative of introducing the vehicle monitoring and identification system a good step forward, and observed that such systems had successfully been introduced in many parts of the world.

The chief minister directed Nadra officials to prepare and maintain a database of driving licences.

The meeting was attended by ministers Brig (Retd) Akhtar Zamin, Dewan Mohammed Yousuf Farooqui and Dr Karim Mahar, besides Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, DG Rangers and other officials.—APP
