LAHORE, Nov 18: The government is considering a proposal to suspend local governments or to freeze their funds to ensure free and fair elections, yielding to pressures from the opposition and certain other quarters, Dawn learnt on Sunday.

According to well-placed sources, a decision in this regard is likely to be taken in a day or two.

A key outgoing minister said the government had almost decided to freeze local governments’ funds.

PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto has called time and again for the suspension of local governments before the elections, but outgoing Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has been opposing the demand.
