QUETTA, March 16: The sports director of the University of Balochistan, Essa Saqib, was shot dead by two masked armed men on Sariab Road near the main gate of the university on Saturday.

He was going to the university in his car and as he reached near the main gate of the university, the assailants opened indiscriminate fire at the car.

Mr Saqib received bullet wounds in different parts of his body. He died while he was being taken to the Civil Hospital.

According to a witness, the assailants were waiting for their target near the university gate. Another witness told police that the attackers had been four in number.

Policemen were inside the university near its main gate when the incident took place, but they were alleged to have taken no action against the fleeing assailants.

According to the SHO of the Sariab Road police station, a dispute over the ownership of a plot has led to the murder of Mr Saqib.

The bother of the deceased lodged an FIR with the police and nominated Abdul Wahid as suspect. No arrest had been made till the filing of this report late on Saturday night.
