PESHAWAR, Feb 27: NWFP Governor NWFP Lt-Gen (retd) Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai has said that Pakistan is deploying additional force along its border in the Waziristan tribal region with Afghanistan to check cross-border infiltration.

The governor was speaking during a meeting with British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett here on Tuesday. He said he was hopeful that Afghanistan would undertake similar measures on its side of the border.

An official statement said that Mr Aurakzai defended the North Waziristan agreement and said it had helped scale down cross-border movement considerably.

Ms Beckett was briefed on the prevailing law and order situation in tribal areas with particular reference to the restive Waziristan region. Pakistan has already deployed over 80,000 troops in the volatile tribal region along the Afghan border to eliminate sanctuaries of Al Qaeda and the Taliban and control the cross-border movement of militants.

The governor reiterated that the fight against terrorism would continue, and said that cooperation with the coalition partners would be maintained and strengthened to achieve the desired results.

The presence of Afghan refugees in the province and their resettlement plan and development activities in Fata and other tribal areas also came under discussion.

Ms Beckett lauded the role of Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and expressed the hope that the efforts would continue till the achievement of objectives.
