Prisoners’ bid to escape foiled

RAWALPINDI, Feb 14: Police foiled an escape bid of 36 hand- cuffed prisoners of Adiala Jail on Thursday.

A spokesman for the police said the prisoners were being driven from the jail to the district courts when the van (RIR- 2414) arrived at a police picket at Adiala Road, some of the prisoners sprinkled red chilly powder into the eyes of the policemen, snatched their rifles and tried to break open the locks of the van.

However, they were overpowered by the policemen, the spokesman said.

An FIR has been registered at the Civil Lines Police Station against the prisoners, the spokesman said.

DEMO: More than 250 shopkeepers of Rabi Centre blocked the traffic on Murree Road to protest against prolonged laodshedding, witnesses and police said.

The demonstrators set tyres on fire to highlight what they called an unjustifiable action of Wapda.

The protesters said the power supply to the centre had been cut for the last two days despite the fact that they had paid their electricity bills and other dues.

The shopkeepers demanded immediate restoration of power supply.

However, the demonstrators dispersed soon after the arrival of police.

“A case will be registered against the protesters who have violated the law by blocking the road,” the DSP of New Town Circle told Dawn.

However, no arrest had been made in this connection till the filing of this report.
