Woman seeks protection

SUKKUR, Oct 3: A divorced woman appealed to the Sukkur bench of the Sindh High Court on Tuesday to order police to protect her and her family from her former husband who she alleged was threatening them if they did not pay him Rs100,000 fine imposed by an illegal ‘jirga’.

The bench comprising Justice Rehmat Hussain Jaffery admitted the case for regular hearing on October 5.

Ms Zarina, daughter of Jalaluddin Panhwar, said in the petition that she had sought divorce from her husband, Allah Ditto Dhoondho, through Civil Court Daharki in 2004.

But her former husband never accepted the court’s decision. On August 17 he got an illegal jirga presided over by Khuda Bux Mahar in Daharki impose a fine of Rs100,000 on her father and since then he had been threatening them with dire consequences if they did not pay the fine.

HOUSE SET ON FIRE: Armed men injured a villager and set his house ablaze over an old karo-kari dispute near Tangwani late Monday night.

Reports reaching here said that the armed men barged into the house of Shah Murad Jakhrani and opened fire seriously injuring Ellahi Bux, 20. Afterwards, they took away 20 heads of cattle before setting the house on fire.

The injured was rushed to taluka hospital, Tangwani, but police had so far filed no case of the incident.

breaches: Four villages and standing crop of paddy over hundreds of acres were inundated when a drain developed three breaches near Garhi Yasin late Monday night.

Reports reaching here said that the breaches flooded Ghulam Rasool Jaffery, Rohlo Khan Jaffery, Rajoo Khan Jaffery and Gehno Wah villages and paddy on hundreds of acres.

The villagers, councillors of union council Nam Sharif, Rahim Bux Jaffery and Mohammad Bux Jaffery, told the newsmen that despite timely information no irrigation official turned up to help them plug breaches.

They held the officials responsible for the breaches and demanded that the government take immediate action against them.

DRIVER KILLED: The driver of a Mazda pickup was killed instantly and a labourer sustained serious wounds when their vehicle collided with a trawler coming from the opposite direction near Ghotki Bypass on National Highway early on Tuesday morning.
