KARACHI, Sept 27: Another policeman was shot dead by unknown assailants on Sharea Faisal on Wednesday night, bringing the toll of policemen killed on this prime artery since June 2006 to five. Six more policemen have been killed in other parts of the city during this period.

Constable Mohammad Imran was on his way back home after discharging duty at Madadgar 15, Gulshan, when shot at a deserted stretch of the road between Star Gate and Rangers Headquarters on Wednesday night. The assailants were believed to be riding a motorcycle.

According to police, Imran received a single bullet in his head and died on the spot. His body was shifted to the Jinnah Hospital for post-mortem examination.

A senior police officer wondered that security had not been beefed up in this highly sensitive area despite the fact that four policemen had been killed on Sharea Faisal before the fresh incident.

ENCOUNTER: Police shot dead an alleged bandit in an encounter in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Wednesday night. They claimed that three of his accomplices managed to escape.

Police said four armed men had barged into a house in Block 15 and someone among the inmates alerted Madadgar 15 for help.

A police mobile rushed to the scene and spotted the armed men fleeing. The suspects were challenged and encounter ensued, the police said, adding that one of the fleeing suspects was shot dead while resisting arrest. The other three made their escape good, they said.

A TT pistol and valuables were recovered from the possession of the dead suspect, they claimed.

BODY FOUND: A decomposed body was found lying at a deserted place in Malir Cantonment area on Wednesday night.

Police shifted the body to the Jinnah Hospital for post-mortem examination.

FIR: Members of a student group have lodged an FIR reporting kidnapping of their associate in Karachi University on Wednesday.

Police said that complainant Mujahid Rasheed reported that his associate and member of the Islami Jamiat-i-Talaba, Sulaiman, was taken away by members of a rival student group, Jeay Sindh, from the campus.
