Musharraf to meet Bush next month

ISLAMABAD, Aug 20: President Pervez Musharraf is scheduled to visit Washington on Sept 21-22 where he will hold talks with US President George W. Bush, sources told Dawn.

“The meeting will take place at the White House most probably on Sept 22,” a source said. According to informed sources the two presidents will also have a one-to-one meeting.

The war against terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation, defence cooperation, democracy, Pakistan-US strategic dialogue, Indo-Pakistan peace process particularly the Kashmir issue, the Middle East crisis and Iran’s nuclear programme would be the key talking points, it is learnt.

President Musharraf will address students at the Georgetown University. Also on the cards is a meeting with the Pakistani community from across the US and interaction with the media.

The president will be in the US for almost 10 days. In New York he will attend the opening of the United Nations General Assembly session.

On Sept 25 the president will participate in launching spread over two days in New York of his autobiography, In the line of fire, which will be released by the American publishing house Simon and Schuster.

President Musharraf is due to embark on the tour on Sept 11 which will take him to Europe, Cuba and the United States. He will remain away from the country till Sept 28.

His first stop will be Brussels where he has been invited to address the European Parliament.

He is also expected to speak at the ‘Global discourse on Kashmir’ in Brussels on Sept 12-13, being organised by the All Party Group for Kashmir in the European Parliament and the Kashmir Centre.

He will proceed to Havana to attend the summit conference of the Non-Aligned Movement. In Havana he is expected to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
