Snooker: Rambel Gul lifts trophy

PESHAWAR, Jan 3: Rambel Gul defeated Nouman Shah in the final to lift the 14th Frontier Cup snooker at Green’s Snooker Club on Tuesday.

The score was 7-99, 88-18, 63-28, 10-87, 20-78, 78-15, 65-38.

The defeat is Nouman’s third in the final of Frontier Cup. He was twice beaten by Rambel in 2002 and 2005 and once by Inamur Rehman in 2004.

Rambel was completely outplayed by Nouman in the first frame.

Nouman beat him 7-99 with the highest break of 72 points.

The early defeat, however, failed to deter Rambel and he roared back into the game scoring 114. The score includes his highest-ever break of 84 against Nouman’s only one.

From here onwards, Rambel did not look back and won two frames in a row 88-18, 63-28, but faltered in the next two and Nouman won 10-87, 20-78 to make the score evenly poised at 3-3.

Rambel continued his march towards victory winning the two next frames 78-15, 65-38 to seal the fate the match. He recorded breaks of 30 and 38.

Sixty-four players from various districts of the province took part in the championship, and top six qualified for the National championship.

Rambel was awarded a winner’s trophy and a cash prize of Rs10,000 while Nouman got the runner-up’s trophy and a cash prize of Rs5,000.—APP
