Arts council auditorium opposed

GUJRANWALA, Dec 30: The plan to construct an arts council auditorium at the Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park is a conspiracy to destroy the sole recreational park in the city by the administration.

This was stated by former mayor Alhaj Mohammad Aslam while speaking at a news conference here on Thursday.

He said during his mayorship he acquired 26 acres and formed a recreational park, but now a plan was being made to construct an arts council auditorium on its eight acres.

He said ruling PML ministers, parliamentarians, traders, lawyers and citizens had opposed the construction of the auditorium. They suggested that the arts council building in the DCO Complex should be expanded or it should be constructed at Sheikhupura Morr near the mini-stadium on six acres or at the Ghulam Husain Park.

He also opposed an exhibition of made-in-Gujranwala products by industrialists at the park.

SUSPENDED: Five policemen, including an SHO, were suspended from service for trespassing on an industrialist’s house and manhandling him and his son at the police station here on Friday.

Reports said that Sabzi Mandi SHO Shahbaz Ahmad Hinjra and his staff trespassed on Muhammad Aslam’s house. They picked him, his brother Muhammad Saleem and son Yasir from their house and later manhandled them at the police station.

They were released when the area people besieged the police station and piled pressure on the police.

DPO Dr Arif Mushtaq suspended SHO Shahbaz Hinjra, SI Javed Akhter, ASI Naeem Butt and constables Tehsin and Nadim and issued them show-cause notices.

Meanwhile, three policemen, including choki in charge, were booked on corruption charges on the orders of a local court.

Rasoolnagar chowki in charge SI Mushtaq Ahmad had picked expatriate Muhammad Awais from his house and detained him in the police station for five days without registering a case against him.

Later, the SI released him after taking a bribe from his heirs. The victim after his release moved court who ordered the registration of a case against police officials.
