Writers plan protest against dam

Published December 5, 2005

DADU, Dec 4: The Sindhi Adabi Sangat announced here on Sunday that it would hold processions in district towns on Dec 11 in protest against the Kalabagh dam, greater Thal canal, Bhasha dam and other anti-Sindh projects.

Under the aegis of the Sangat, hundreds of writers, poets, social workers and intellectuals gathered in Mehar and held a protest demonstration against water projects.

They were led by Sangat secretary-general Taj Joyo, joint secretary Riazat Buriro, treasurer Asif Mithianwi and spokesman Azad Anwar Kandhro.

Mr Joyo criticized President Gen Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and the minister for water and power for advocating construction of dams.

He warned that if assembly members belonging to the ruling party supported the Kalabagh dam, people of Sindh would resort to their social boycott in constituencies.

Mr Joyo said the Sangat would launch a series of protests throughout the province against water projects on the Indus.

Mr Buriro said assemblies of Sindh, Balochistan and the NWFP had passed unanimous resolutions against the Kalabagh dam but the government was insisting on constructing it.
