Hidden Cove lifts Babar Cup

LAHORE, Nov 20: The bay English mare, Hidden Cove, ably ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman, won the Zaheerud Din Muhammad Babar Cup run over 1600 metres during the 12th Lahore Winter Meeting at the floodlit Racecourse in an exciting finish on Sunday.

As the 10 runners drawn for the event took a neat start fancied filly, Benzine took a flying start and led the field till 100 metres from home before it was challenged by Hidden Cove.

Then there ensued a ding-dong duel between the two English thoroughbreds and in the meantime Hidden Cove surged past Benzine, who was nosed out by late coming English colt Brummel to third position. Dixie Queen completed the frame.

The winner trained by A B Malik clocked 1:37.4/5 seconds over the distance.

The owner M R Rafiq received the glittering cup named after Mogul King Zaheerud Din Muhammad Babar.

The main supporting event, the Park View Cup run over 1600 metres was won by bay filly Height Of Happiness in a front-running style.

The favourite filly trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar was piloted home by jockey M Hanif. She beat Lucky Murad by a distance.

The promising colt, Thrill, won the second supporting event, the Tariq Bin Zayad Cup run over 1400 metres defeating Welcome Boss by three lengths in a smart timing of 1:25.4/5 seconds.

The colt had the distinction of winning four races in a row.

Seven well-backed horses won in an eight races. Midway through the proceedings the race-goers observed a one-minute silence as a mark of respect and paid tribute to the senior steward, Brig (retd:) Ihjaz Hussain who died on Thursday.

They also offered fateha for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
