BRISBANE, Oct 27: Paceman Daren Powell gave the touring West Indies a fillip with four top-order wickets to help dismiss a strong Queensland line-up for 323 on the first day of their warm-up four-day game on Thursday.

Powell took 4-58 as the Windies bowled out a Queensland team containing eight internationals for 323 and were 13 without loss off four overs at the close.

Yet the Jamaican speedster finished the day in pain, leaving the field with hip soreness after having Queensland struggling at 215 for eight when he caught One-day International Andrew Symonds (55).

Powell was not the only injury concern with all-rounder Wavell Hinds out of next week’s first Test at the Gabba after fracturing his left little finger while fielding.

Hinds will have to keep the finger immobilised for 10 days and he won’t be available until the Second Test in Hobart, starting on Nov 17.

After the encouraging start with arguably their three best paceman — Jermaine Lawson, Corey Collymore and Fidel Edwards — rested for the tour opener, the tourists failed to deliver the killer blow and rookie leg-spinner Ryan Le Loux frustrated them with 63.

Tino Best (1-83 off 17 overs) and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (3-86 off 19.4) were wayward and part-time spinner Marlon Samuels (2-79) had to keep things tight.

The erratic Best angered Matthew Hayden with a first-ball beamer that narrowly missed the Test opener.

Dropped by Hinds five balls later off Best, Hayden failed to make the tourists pay when he played on for a duck, trying to pull Powell to mid-wicket next over.

Powell also snared Australian all-rounder Shane Watson (20) with an edge to Chris Gayle at second slip.
