DADU, Oct 5: EDO health Dr Dhani Bux Thebo has said that among 1,000 newly-born babies, 136 are dying due to poverty and malnutrition among pregnant women in far-flung areas of the country.

He said traditional birth attendant (Daee) and lady health workers should provide information to pregnant women to protect themselves from dangerous diseases.

He was presiding over a meeting of doctors, lady health workers and officials of NGOs in Sita road on Tuesday. Dr Thebo said training would be imparted to lady health workers and doctors related which would decrease the mortality rate.

Dr Nabila Ali, chief executive Paiman told the meeting that with help of the John Snow Incorporation of America, a programme was being launched in ten districts including Sukkur to provide best services in the hospitals.

She said her organization would bear expenses of pregnant women and it would also provide operation theatres, labour rooms and anaesthetists to hospitals of these selected districts where hospitals would be upgraded to provide health facilities to pregnant women.

Dr Arbab Jokhio, 164 lady health workers and 26 traditional birth attendants (Daees) participated in the discussion.
