Ferrero faces Nadal in last 8

BASTAD (Sweden), July 7: Top seed Rafael Nadal outgunned compatriot Alberto Martin 6-2 6-4 on Thursday to set up an all-Spanish quarterfinal with Juan Carlos Ferrero at the claycourt Swedish Open.

The French Open champion, playing in his trademark sleeveless shirt, dominated the first set but had to work hard in the second where he fought off several break points at 4-3 and at 5-4 when serving for the match.

Nadal expects tougher opposition from Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, another Spaniard, 6-3 6-4.

Nadal has beaten Ferrero twice this year, in Valencia and in the Barcelona final where he beat him in straight sets.

MOODIE UPSETS DENT

NEWPORT (Rhode Island): South African Wesley Moodie made the most of everything Taylor Dent gave him, upsetting the top-seeded American 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday in the second round of the 355,000-dollar Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

Dent became the 29th straight top seed to fail to win the title at this grass court tournament.

The 2002 winner, Dent double-faulted 15 times, including six times in the third game of the second set after saving three break points and forcing five deuces.

In the quarterfinals, Moodie will face Slovakian Michal Mertinak, who defeated fifth-seeded American Robby Ginepri 6-3, 6-4.

Second-seeded American Vincent Spadea of the United States moved on, defeating Slovakian Karol Kucera 6-1, 6-4.

In the quarterfinals, Dupuis will face another Brit, defending champion and third seed Greg Rusedski, a 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) winner over Czech Robin Vik.
