SRINAGAR, July 23: Five Kashmiri fighters and a Hindu civilian were killed and six civilians were wounded on Wednesday and overnight in freedom-related violence in occupied Kashmir, police said.

Six people, including a Hindu pilgrim, were injured on Wednesday by a grenade thrown by suspected Mujahideen at a camp of the pro-Indian militant group Ikhwan in the main market of Qazigund township, 80 kilometres south of Srinagar, a police spokesman said.

“The grenade fell short of the target and exploded among pedestrians, injuring six of them,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Indian troops shot dead five Kashmiris in three separate encounters in the southern Rajouri and northern Kupwara districts.

One of the freedom fighters killed in Kupwara was a Pakistani functioning as “divisional commander” of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, police said.

In the southern Doda district suspected Kashmiris abducted and later shot dead a Hindu resident, Rakesh Kumar, police said. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.—AFP
