RAWALPINDI, July 8: The World Health Organisation has agreed to include the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in its directory of medical teaching institutions, a university official said on Tuesday.

“We have received a letter from the WHO stating that the UHS would be shortly put on the directory of medical teaching institutions,” he said.

This would bring to an end a long debate about the international recognition of the university, he added.

Both the federal and Punjab government had requested the WHO to include the newly set up UHS in its directory. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has already accorded recognition to the university.

Meanwhile, the university, the official said, has finalized reciprocal education and training arrangements with some of the leading medical institutions abroad including Sheffield University, Bristol University, Manchester University, St Georges Hospital and Guys Hospital.

He said the university was about to launch PhD programme in basic medical sciences. The UHS has got the most modern examination system and has recently acquired a sophisticated software for examination purpose from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, at a cost of Rs2.5 million, he added.
