Pakistan condemns shootout

Published December 14, 2001

ISLAMABAD, Dec 13: The government of Pakistan here on Thursday “strongly” and “unequivocally” condemned the attack on the Indian parliament in New Delhi, saying the news was received with shock.

At the outset of his press briefing, the foreign office spokesman read out the government press note but refrained from offering any comment on the incident or enlarging on the 40-word official statement. He cited lack of a detailed report, either from New Delhi or Pakistan High Commission, on the incident for not offering any comment.

The press note reads: “The Government of Pakistan has received with shock the news about the attack on the Indian Parliament building in New Delhi by armed intruders, which has resulted in a number of casualties. The Government strongly and unequivocally condemns the attack”.

Pressed to comment on reports coming out from New Delhi on the electronic media, the spokesman expressed his inability to say anything more on the episode in the absence of official account of what happened outside the parliament house.
