GUJRAT, June 24: A polio team comprising two lady health workers came under attack when a couple subjected them to severe torture for not attending to them exclusively in Karimpura locality on Church Road in the limits of Lalamusa City police station on Monday.

Reports said that LHWs Bashir Fatima and Farzana Kausar knocked at the door of Ijaz Ahmed and inquired about the presence of any children for administering polio drops. On their refusal, the polio team left the place and continued administering polio drops to the children in the same locality.

After some time, Ijaz Ahmed and a woman approached the two LHWs and asked them to administer polio drops to a child of their guest. The polio team asked them that they would revisit their house after a short while. At this, Ahmed and the woman fell into a rage and started thrashing both LHWs. Basheer Fatima, who was pregnant, fell unconscious when the couple hit at her belly and also injured her nose.

Both health workers were shifted to the Lalamusa Trauma Center where their condition was stated to be stable.

On the report of polio supervisor Ismail Chadhar, police have registered a case against Ijaz and a woman on charges of interfering in the government functioning, hurling life threats and torturing polio team workers. Police also arrested one of the accused.

It is learnt that no policeman was accompanying the polio team.
