THATTA, June 21: All arrangements have been completed for the plantation of around 750,000 mangroves on coastal island Kharo Chhaan along the Indus Delta, expected today, in an attempt to form a Guinness World Record for planting the most number of mangroves in a single day.

Talking to Dawn, chief conservator Riaz Ahmed Wagan said that 300 social workers, volunteers and forest department employees would begin plantation of mangrove saplings at 6 am on Saturday morning and keep at it till 8 pm.

Mexico was the first country to be hold the world record for planting 350,000 mangrove saplings in a day, followed by India with 450,000 saplings.

Pakistan first broke the record in 2009 by planting 541,176 saplings but the record was later broken by India by planting 550,000 saplings.

However, Pakistan is now set to regain the Guinness World Record title today in a campaign managed and sponsored by the Coastal Development Authority, with collaboration of Sindh forest department and the Asian Development Bank.
