LAHORE, May 27: Jamiat Ulema Islam (Fazal) has set three major conditions for joining the incoming federal government to be led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Sources privy to the on-going talks between the two parties say that the JUI-F has in-writing sought an assurance from the PML-N that the incoming federal government would make serious efforts for introducing Islamic system in the country.

“There is no harm in introducing a system based on Islamic laws. It is also written in our constitution that entire legislation in the country would be done in accordance with Quran and Sunnah. The Islamic Ideological Council has already worked a lot on it and had been submitting its recommendations to the government in the past,” a senior JUI-F leader, who requested anonymity, told Dawn on Monday.

He said his party had also sought an immediate revision of internal and external policies of national interest in accordance with the parliamentary resolutions. “We also want that the resolutions passed by the outgoing parliament in national interest must be implemented in their letter and spirit,” he added.

The JUI-F leader said the party had asked the PML-N to take immediate measures to overcome energy crisis that was adversely affecting the public well as the national economy.

“Besides this, we also want the PML-N government to make efforts for ending the price-hike in order to give relief to the people,” he said.

He, however, would not share the party’s demands with regard to the ministries it seeks in the new setup.

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
