ATTOCK, May 13: The Pakistan Muslim League-N obtained a clear majority in Attock district according to the unofficial results, winning six of the total eight seats.

The PML-N won two of the three National Assembly seats (NA-57 and NA-58) and four Provincial Assembly seats, while the independent Major Group was victorious from NA-59 and PP-15 was won by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

The results were unexpected for the PTI which lost in the district despite a lead in the urban areas, as the PML-N got the majority of the rural areas’ votes. The Pakistan People’s Party also faired badly as it was unable to retain its NA-59 and PP-15 seats, and failed to claim a single seat in the district.

NA-57: PML-N’s Sheikh Aftab Ahmed won the seat in a tough contest by obtaining 59,638 votes against the PTI’s Malik Amin Aslam, who bagged 55,515 votes. Independent candidate Major (Retired) Tahir Sadik Khan remained third with 50,878 votes.

A total of 186,122 votes were polled out of the total 353,751 registered votes of which 180,656 votes were declared valid. The turnout was thus 52.61pc.

NA-58: Malik Itbar Khan (PML-N) won with 84,722 votes against PTI’s Malik Sohail (73,935 votes). Mr Tahir of the Major group remained third with 58,754 votes.

A total of 226,165 votes were polled out of the 359,058 registered votes, of which 7,137 votes were rejected. The turnout was 63.9 percent.

Mr Itbar had contested the seat for the first time, and in 2002, it had been won by his father, late Malik Allahyar Khan.

In 2008,former Punjab’s chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi of the PML-Q had won the seat with 70,613 votes by defeating Sardar Shahnawaz Khan of the PPP( 50,354 votes), while Mr Suhail (then in PML-N) was third with 59,708 votes . NA-59: After a very close contest, the seat was won by newcomer and independent candidate, Sardar Zain Elahi of the Major Group.

Mr Elahi won with only 465 votes, as he bagged 60,284 votes against PML-N’s Asif Ali Malik (59,819 votes). PTI’s Sardar Ali was third with 33,721 votes.

A 64pc turnout was witnessed as 191,704 votes out of the total 309,334 were polled of which 198,841 were declared valid.
