KARACHI: The police investigators who had jumped to conclusions over deaths of a five-member family found shot dead in their home in the Defence Housing Authority and declared the dead family head as the main culprit said on Thursday the evidence was still being examined.

The officials, after having failed to find enough evidence to establish their previous suspicion that Jawad Durrani killed himself after shooting dead his wife Wajeeha and children Rehan, Rameen and Haris, sounded more cautious now.

“A number of objects have been sent to laboratory for forensic examination. Among them is the pistol found at the crime scene which will obviously be examined for fingerprints. Similarly, a computer, a laptop used by Mr Durrani and footages from the CCTV cameras installed outside their home will be checked for clues,” said a senior official wishing not to be named.

He said the police had not yet registered an FIR as the investigators were going through formalities required under Section 174 of the criminal procedural code.

The bodies of all five members of the family were found in their home in DHA Phase-IV on Tuesday morning with a single bullet to the head of each victim fired from a very close range.

Relatives and family friends of the victims find it hard to digest that Mr Durrani can kill his loved ones and commit suicide himself while the investigators who had immediately declared it a case of quadruple murder and suicide have no proof to establish the motive for the tragic deaths.

“We don’t want to further complicate things in haste,” said the official when asked why the police had immediately declared it as a quadruple murder and suicide.

“Initially, it looked like that and, frankly speaking, we have no other reason to suspect any other reason. But still, the reports of autopsies and forensic examination are crucial to set the course of investigations,” he said.
