CENTURION: Mohammad Hafeez put a poor Test series behind him to lead Pakistan to a crushing 95-run win in the second and final Twenty20 international against South Africa at SuperSport Park here on Sunday.

Hafeez hammered 86 and took three wickets for 25 runs, while fast bowler Umar Gul took five for six as South Africa collapsed to 100 all out in reply to Pakistan's 195 for seven in what was a series decider after the first match in Durban was washed out.

Appointed Pakistan's captain in the shortest form of the game, Hafeez thrashed four sixes and nine fours off 50 balls.

When he was on 73 he became the first Pakistani to reach 1,000 runs in T20 internationals.

His innings was in dramatic contrast to his struggles in a three-match Test series which ended last week in which he could score only 43 runs in six innings at an average of 7.16.

“I knew I was playing well in the nets but just getting good balls in the Tests,” he said.

“It was disappointing but the coach (Dav Whatmore) has been working hard with me in the nets.”

Hafeez said he felt criticism of the team after they were beaten 3-0 in the Test series had been premature.

“As a team we knew it was a different format and we have to come out with some good performances. The boys showed a great deal of character and wanted to do something special with the one-day internationals coming up.”

South Africa and Pakistan meet in five one-day internationals, starting in Bloemfontein next Sunday.

A second wicket partnership of 83 off 48 balls with Ahmed Shehzad (46) set Pakistan on the way, but the innings lost momentum when Hafeez was out hit wicket with the total on 170 off the third ball of the 17th over.

Hafeez slipped as he went back in his crease to hit Rory Kleinveldt to the cover boundary and he dislodged his bails.

South Africa made a flying start, with AB de Villiers batting audaciously as the home side reached 48 for one in four overs.

But Gul then took four wickets in six balls, spread across two overs, as the match swung in Pakistan's favour.

Three South Africans were out first ball.

In between De Villiers was bowled by Mohammad Irfan for 36, made off 22 balls with two sixes and four fours.

“The shorter the version of the game, the more one individual can come through and win it,” said South Africa captain Faf du Plessis.

“Hafeez was fantastic and put out bowlers under pressure. Umar Gul was a case of us trying to win the game by going hard to get the run rate up.”

Pakistan: Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez*, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal†, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan

Waqar younis is commenting as if his yesteryear legends has won series in South Africa,England Australia. We all know how they fared against Australia in Australia,England in England and against South Africa. At least this new team gave scary moment to South Africa in test too and 2nd Test could have gone other way around. You need to give time to settle down. You cannot make it over night replacing bowler like Aamir and Asif whatever their conduct has been off the field. It takes time to fill in their shoes. This is different format of cricket and best thing is Pakistan has mastered the art in T20.

If 195 is bad score in 20 over, then not sure what is good score in your book? Please do not forget they were playing against South Africa and not Bangladesh.

Hafeez showed again that he can be a force on flat tracks. Let's hope selectors keep him away from test team playing outside of subcontinent. Gul can do magic when people are trying to hit every ball.......that just won't happen in test cricket. Time to pick the right talent for right format and pitch.

I could've sworn I saw comments in this same paper asking for the heads of this same team after their Test loss last week. Sometimes fans are the 'losers' not the team.

Pakistan played bad and Proteas worst! Pakees should have scored 240+ and get them out 60+-. It was like no body was interested in it but Gul and Hafeez.

Mr. S. M. Mustafa, what sort of a comment is that? Their national team is a B Team? I can't believe you said that.

Well done Pakistan. But why not Afridi given a single over? I think still politics is going on in the Pakistan's dressing room :( The way Hafeez got Ahmed Shahzad run out, it was very poor. Lets us see how these politicians deal with the one dayers :) Ahmed Shahzad should be included in the one day squad.

Too little, too late!!! This win as Waqar Younis put it doesn't mean much. The SA sweep in the test series was brutal. Pakistan team is natural in the shorter format of the game, especially on flat tracks like this one was. However, they have to sweep the ODIs also to avenge the BIG lost in Test matches. It would not be easy at all though. Once SA gets the green and bouncy pitches again they will make professor look like a kindergartner (as they did in test series). Ahmed Shazad looked really sharp out there, but needs to work on his running and fitness. Junaid has lots of potential, can someone please tell him that....he is not stepping up to the plate. Gul, Hefeez, and Sarfarz have lot to prove when it comes to longer format. At this level no excuses please.... Not sure what Malik is doing there? Afridi should start thinking about life after cricket. However, he deserves a place in this squad becuase of his bowling varaitions...Anyways, good Luck to Misbah and co in ODIs!

Our batting lineup is comfortable with T20 and One-day where the batsman doesn't need high stamina and attention span.

Hafeez is a very good player for all formats. You just can't blame because he failed in one series and that series was against one of the best fast bowling attack in their home country. Do you remember Australia was bundled out for under 100 in two innings a couple of years ago? Any good batsman can fail. I am pretty sure not only hafeez but others will perform better if Pakistanis start to play more test cricket.

An excellent performance by the green shirts. Such type of unpredictable performances make Pakistan cricket team one of the most dangerous team in the world of cricket.

Hafeez: Show us consistency in longer version of the game not just one knock like this once in a blue moon...and it goes for all the senior player including Misbah, Younus, Gul, Kamran & others.....

it was a good win. but this win was against south africans b side. all the africans stars were on rest and the africans put a second grade side. but win is win. the real test could be in odi where pakistan will face a full sided africans.. best of luck for the green shirts.

What a sensational performance by Umar Gul and Hafeez. Hafeez should never have been in Test team though. Bowling SA for it's lowest T-20 total ever will boost team morale for ODIs.
