KARACHI, Feb 20: A police constable was killed in a botched bank robbery in the SITE area on Wednesday, officials said.

They added that three armed men wearing shalwar kameez arrived at a private bank branch situated near Siemens Chowrangi within the remit of the Site-A police station and were challenged by a police constable, Yousaf Sharif, 50, who was on duty at the bank. The suspected robbers fired multiple shots at him and fled, while two private bank guards, instead of taking on the armed men, ran into the branch building, said a senior police officer of the area.

The police constable sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died before he could be taken to hospital, the police said.

The policeman hailed from Gujrat and resided in Baldia. He had been posted in SITE Town since 2009.
