RAWALPINDI: Pakistan's cricket chief on Friday blamed the women's flop in the World Cup on security fears in host India, claiming the players were “overwhelmed”.

Pakistan finished last in the eight-team event after losing all four matches, which were moved to the eastern city of Cuttack when the right-wing nationalist Shiv Sena party threatened to disrupt Pakistan's matches in Mumbai.

The International Cricket Council decided to house Pakistan at the club house of the Barabati stadium instead of a hotel for security reasons.

“The situation was uncertain for the women's team and players were overwhelmed by fears as no hotel was willing to give them security,” said Zaka Ashraf, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after talks with Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

Pakistan team manager Ayesha Ashar said at the time that the squad was happy with the arrangements made at the Barabati stadium.

But Malik said he would raise the issue with India.

“Not giving security to our women's team is a concern and I will raise this issue with the Indian government,” Malik said.

Nine Pakistani players were also withdrawn from the Hockey India League over threats from Shiv Sena last month, after clashes killed five soldiers along the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the disputed region of Kashmir.

The two nuclear powers are bitter rivals who have fought three wars since independence in 1947.

But Ashraf also dismissed as “rumours” speculation that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will have to move abroad to a neutral venue over security fears.

“In all probability the league will be held in Pakistan and the interior ministry has assured the best security for the foreign players,” he said.

No international cricket has been played in Pakistan, which suffers near daily Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked violence, since gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in March 2009, killing eight Pakistanis and wounding seven visiting players.

Minnows Bangladesh twice called off tours last year over security fears and the head of the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA) has warned players not to take part in the inaugural Twenty20 tournament in March.

The PCB claimed last week that around 50 overseas players had signed for the two-week league due to start from March 26.

“A lot of top players are willing to take part in the league but some boards have reservations which we are trying to remove,” said Ashraf.

I agree with reader Arif. If our team was not given security, it should have come back. PCB should stop making silly excuses for its failures. Incidentally, the remarks of Zaka Ashraf that the PSL had been promised "the best security" by the Ministry of Interior also rings hollow. The same Ministry had promised "Presidential level security" for the Sri Lankan team, and see what happened.

Since the ICC Women's worldcup is Under ICC, Pakistan should have withdrawn from the worldcup and should have sued the ICC for it's failure to provide security and even a hotel to our players.

The security mishap is major issue & it would have played on the minds of the Pakistani squad. However, it should not be used as an excuse for the dismal performance in the World Cup. The inability to compete against the top teams is not down to security problems, but it is the result of the lack of exposure & experience of the ladies playing in the team. The PCB should accept the responsibility of the poor performance, move on & bring in a strong domestic circuit where women cricket teams from different regions can play, improve their skills, get playing experience & get stronger mentally. . The team captain said that the players lacked in fitness & they cannot compete in a 50 over match physically. She has cited this reason for the early exit from the world cup among others. In this scenario, this is embarrassing for a cricketing nation like ours, who are known to produce young, extremely talented cricketers (esp in the men's game). Rather then hiding behind excuses, PCB should shift their focus to the main issue at hand & provide these ladies with the appropriate facilities to improved & thus, succeed.

Very silly and sad. The country which wants to be permanent member of security council could not provide security to these brave girls who defied all hurdles in ours conservative society to reach this level.

PCB is afraid to raise any issue against India at any international forum, in such a situation any other team would have withdrawn on security concerns but PCB is so weak that it cannot speak up even on such sensitive issue security of its players,--What a shame.

Why were they sent? Well, to prove a couple of points. First, that when Pakistan makes a commitment with the international community, it stands by it. Second, that staging an international event in India is just as risky as it is in Pakistan. So, ICC should apply the same standard in both countries. I am glad PCB sent the women's team. Sure it was a hardship on the girls, and for that, they should be rewarded, but it clearly exposed India as no less risky a place than Pakistan. I believe sending the team was a calculated move, and a good one at that.

So wheres the problem? The terror network in Pakistan and support for proxies led to attack on Srilankan team. Yet the culprtis were not caught. A large section of population rich or poor is radicalised and supports these rogues. So why blame others? The question is why is this so hard to fix? Its because of sympathy for religious fundamentalists in the society thats the root cause. Zaka should show integrity and focus on his country and not blame India. Keep your house in order first!

Why are we complaining about security now when all the matches are lost. Sounds like we are trying to find an excuse for losing matches. I say this to the women team, d'ont be disheartened. Winning and losing is part of the game. Learn from your mistakes and play better cricket next time. We are still proud of you

PCB management is clueless. This was the best opportunity to pull out from the tournament showing the world that India is not better than Pakistan. They have their own Talibans and everyone knows it but refuses to acknowledge. How long PCB is going to play a dead victim. There were ample opportunities lost when PCB could have articulated their concerns.

This is a statement by the Pakistani team captain which was published in all major newspapers "Sana also thanked the host, Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) for all the hospitality. “The way the people supported us was heart-warming. It was a tough tour, but we have enjoyed ourselves. The OCA, its academy, the support staff have all been really helpful and have gone out of the way to look after us,” she said. PSB please do not lie (just like you lied about PSL)

I hope organizers did not run away from providing security to guest tam and I am not sure if blame for loosing all matches can be put on not getting hotel accommodation (making India responsible for non-state actors). But as an Indian, I am ashamed that Organizer did not make sure to make comfortable to guest team; after coming such news, Indian govt. did not initiate action and did not make sure to provide accommodation with other teams and last but not least BCCI - which is richest cricketing body, full of politicians as other sporting bodies in India was dull in such situation. I can't believe BCCI tired but was not able to make it. But its not surprise to me as BCCI is just profit making body which is run by politician and not by experienced cricket players and sensitive people. If organizers, govt. or BCCI could not provide accommodation & services to some of guest teams at same level, they should not have invited those team(s), instead of playing with dignity of the guest team. As an Indian, my sincere apologies to Pakistan women cricket team members for insensitivity of event management.

Mr. Zaka Ashraf, who otherwise comes across a reasonable person, seems to be dragging his feet in Governmental politics. I listened to Basit Ali's interview who gave the impression as if the move of arrangements made at the Barabati stadium was the best thing that had happened to Pakistan Women Cricket team. He was so upbeat not only about the arrangements but also sounded very optimistic about the chances of Pak cricket team. I wonder if upbeat tone of Basit was the result of him getting the opportunity at the last minute to tour with women team as batting coach/consultant or whatever one might call it. I think bringing Basit in at the last moment was a politically motivated decision as well which may have disturbed the preparation of the ladies. After all with an 11th hour change what he could have brought to improve the techniques and temperaments of the players and chances of Pakistan that coach Mohtashim Rashid could not do in long period of time? Mr. Zaka would have been better placed accepting the gulf between Pakistan cricketers and other countries and announcing the concrete steps he would take to improve the standard of Pak women cricket.

ICC must not award any other international event in India as they have Hindu Taliban terrorists too. Pakistan should also boycott all the events in India and register their complaints to ICC as well.
