JOHANNESBURG: Pakistan have 10 days to come up with an answer over how to counter South Africa’s new-ball bowling attack ahead of the second Test at Newlands.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq said their inability to find a way to deal with the new ball was the major factor in their 211-run defeat in the first Test on Monday.

It will be of little comfort to the tourists that the next Test will be played in Cape Town where South Africa bowled Australia out for 47 in November 2011 and New Zealand for 45 just last month.

“We will try and get more practice in around the new ball. If you can get through the new ball then I think we can score runs in South African conditions,” Misbah told reporters.

The tourists will play a two-day practice game against a Western Province Invitational XI in Cape Town on Feb 10 and 11, a chance at least to test this new resolve even if against vastly inferior opposition.

Their second innings total of 268 on Monday gives Pakistan some reason to be cheerful off the back of their record Test low of 49 in their first effort with the bat.

“It gives a little bit of hope, the fact that we scored some runs. All these players will have learnt from the last three and a half days. It is about applying yourself and getting good starts,” Misbah said.

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore has urged his players to be positive in the face of the South African attack.

Asked whether the team would carry forward any psychological scars from the first innings capitulation on day two, Whatmore says the players have accepted the circumstances and have moved on.

“I would like to think it does not do too much psychological damage,” he said. “You try to look at the facts and not get too emotional about it. It was two hours of relentless pace and swing. They never took the pressure off. It was incredible.”—Reuters

Dear sir, Practise makes a man perfect but its too little too late. Dave whatmore should have prepared them well before the tour at the cricket academy in lahore but he is milking his usd 16000 per month without serious effort. This batting debacle has highlighted the poor standard of national cricket academy. Despite located at Qadhafi stadium neither it has unearthed any special talent nor has been able to address the weaknesses of the cricketers. Major shake up of coaching staff of cricket academy and selection of players strictly on merit is need of the hour otherwise flash in the pan players like Imran Farhat will continuously get selected for reasons other than merit. Regards, Hyder

When you do not pick players on their merits, that's what will happen. Why for God Sake, we have Younis Khan in our team. His prime time is long gone, and it's time to inject some new and good blood in this dying body. As long as a country is not good enough to play a decent test match in each and every condition (Like Australia and South Africa), that country is not good enough to be called a Good Cricket Nation.

A very over rated and good for nothing coach. I don't know why PCB always hell-bent in trying to break up a good winning combination. Why Mohsin Khan was let go, when every thing was going good for Pakistan. When we ever gonna learn.

Instead of feeding to the media, coach's job is to give a pep talk to the bunch who have defeated attitude. Sir, your job is to tell them to apply themselves and rise up to the occasion. It is just not the matter of moving on it is the lesson that you learn or at least pretend to learn.

Pakistan needs to learn and move on. I agree we did not get enough time to adjust but it is too late to make that excuse. One thing I can tell you about our cricket team is that they are fully capable and will make a strong comeback.... Watch out Proteas!!!

Pakistan needs new batting coach and new talent in batting. Misbah and Younus must retire from test cricket. Most importantly pakistan needs to get back into the game of TEST cricket.

wat a crap team to represent a nation where every one plays cricket. sack the captain and senior players and teach the baller to bat.

This is sad for the captain to say "If you can get through the new ball........". May be we can ask S.A. to start the match with old ball to help us out.

They don't need coaches. They need psychiatric. You get to play International Cricket because due to possession of cricketing skills. So, if you are failing at this stage, it's mental. I say this because I play cricket.

That's just not true. Misbah was fortunate to have lasted as long as he did. He was unable to play the off stump out swinger despite all his application...answer no technique or foot work .. he got 20 odd runs from edges through the slips that didn't carry .. he should know better.Their teams fate will not be much different in the next match .. Misbah and all these seniors that are making up such excuses should be ashamed of themselves. They are just selfish players that want to bat when conditions are favorable for them only. The only way to play ball COMES through experience. Look at any team they send thier most experience batsmen to Open. Misbah should Open and see off the shine off the new ball and let players like Junaid Jamsheed and Azhar Ali come in middle order to bat. Also Hafeez and Younis khan are subcontinent players...I dont even know why we have Younis Khan ... He is a useless player.. I would play Taufeeq umar instead of him any given day.

I recall that Imran Khan made the team practise with wet tennis balls in Pakistan before a tour of the West Indies in the Eighties to try and get used to playing rising balls on a bouncy type surface. And it worked as Pakistan drew the series there and would have won but for the West Indian umpires. The current team management should have done something similar but Whatmore & co are clueless. Sure the SA bowling was good but the team batted without any grit, determination or positive intent. If you just focus on surviving as the batsmen were clearly doing and not scoring any runs then you're only going to get out.

The answer is to get some dependable middle order batsmen. two names come to mind. Mohammad Yousuf and Fawad Alam, and perhaps Shahid Afridi.

LOL, at last the reality is sinking in now. All those empty bravados and pre-match hype about our "potential" and "talent" has been replaced by more real "we need to ...". But looking at the current Pak batting line up, there's hardly any hope of better performance next time. Hafeez has been around for ages and yet boasts a pathetic batting avg of < 30. Younis - seems so distant & non-attached to the scene, never appears to have learnt anything from his previous getting out cheaply. You don't see him playing with a sense of responsibility or maturity, a random decent knock here n there and thats all. Other than Misbah, we don't have an anchor player in our batting lineup. Most of our batsmen don't have sound technique to play balls going away from the wicket. So forget about next time and get ready for another drubbing and record setting humiliation.

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore seems to be mesmerized by SA bowlers! He keeps saying "It was two hours of relentless pace and swing. They never took the pressure off. It was incredible.” Whose side r u sir?

Pak played one practise match before the Test. This is poor management by the touring management.
